Ideas for Gardens

Willing to contribute photos for display on this site? We, and our regular visitors and contributors would very much appreciate your help in making this focal point for discerning gardeners a success. The emphasis here is on plants in a garden environment, not in their natural location. A snap of that one in your garden would be very much appreciated. Please give as much detail as you can about the plant and the photo.

Magnolia Stellata

Grown by:- George Kelly

Location:- Co Down,  N Ireland

Season/Date taken:- Spring 25th April 2001

Photo Reference:- IGCM0001

OK, I’m not sure if this one is the species or a cultivar, but the scent from this shrub is absolutely wonderful. My reliable old book tells me that Stellata is a dwarf mutant of M. kobus. The flowers are 3-4” across and appear on bare wood, so they tend to look a bit stark. I’m planting a few pink flowers to co-incide with flowering time. Of my three Magolias, this one is definitely my favourite. This plant’s height and spread after 8 years is a mere 4½ ft, and my soil normally sends plants soaring into the sky. I transplanted this shrub to a sunny wall position when it was about 3 years old and it didn’t seem to mind. The rain does make the flowers go brown but fresh and unblemished ones open every day to keep the bush looking great.
