Ideas for Gardens

Willing to contribute photos for display on this site? We, and our regular visitors and contributors would very much appreciate your help in making this focal point for discerning gardeners a success. The emphasis here is on plants in a garden environment, not in their natural location. A snap of that one in your garden would be very much appreciated. Please give as much detail as you can about the plant and the photo.

Acer japonicum ‘Aureum’

Grown by:- George Kelly

Location:- Co Down,  Ireland

Season/Date taken:- Spring 17th April 2001

Photo Reference:- IGC00001

This is one of my favourite Acers, but I find it VERY challenging. Growth was insignificant in summer and I thought I had lost this plant when it dropped all its leaves in August. I kept it dry in a cold greenhouse over winter. There was some dieback (notice the upright stem which I will now risk pruning back to good wood) but I was pleasantly surprised when the only two remaining buds began to the fill out then burst into beautiful new growth. Notice that a little spray of leaves emerged from each bud .
