Martin Lane Fox FRICS VMH
Martin Lane Fox is a Landscape and Garden Designer who has worked on major projects throughout the United Kingdom and in France,Italy, Switzerland, The Middle East,
USA, Canada and the Caribbean.
Having started his working life in Architecture and with a keen interest in Interior Design, he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1963, which led to the
development and refurbishment of buildings and the intricacies of detailed building construction and space management. It is from this period, some 40 years ago, that his passion for horticulture
and the wide opportunities it presents for imaginative design and environmental enhancement have developed. Well in excess of 200 projects have followed which range through creating, renewing and
improving gardens and rural landscapes, many of them involving important Historic buildings; the design and planning of open spaces around commercial and University buildings, the creation of small
gardens in London and other Cities, and the design of garden buildings, pavilions, lakes and formal areas of water.
He is keenly interested in nature conservation, with a particular concern over
many years for British butterflies. This has naturally progressed to involvement with the creation and management of wild flower meadows.
He spent more than 20 years making, on his own
account, a 10-acre garden on acid soil near Newbury, Berkshire, which has been acclaimed in publications throughout the World. It combined an intensive range of plants with a strong design
framework, and it was widely regarded as one of the finest gardens to have been made anywhere since the war. He has recently completed work on his next garden, which covers about 8 acres and
surrounds his home, a 17th Century and Grade 1 Listed Manor House in Dorset. It has already been subject of major features in Architectural Digest and House and Garden Magazine.
He was Vice-Chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society and Chairman of it’s Horticultural Board for a number of years. He was recently awarded the Society’s highest honour, the Victoria Medal
of Honour, being one of only three Designers currently to hold the award.
He has written a number of pieces on gardening for Magazines and Periodicals and he lectures regularly on garden design
and planting, both in the UK and Abroad.
